This painting was re-worked several times over the course of several years. The sitting foreground figure is based on one of the figures in John Singer Sargent’s 1882 painting, The Daughters of Edward D. Boit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. This has long been one of my favourite paintings, and so my painting shown here has become partly an homage to John Singer Sargent.

Double Chopstixx, 2025-26

Oil, acrylic, and paint marker on canvas, 48 × 60 inches.

Currently available at Canvas Gallery in Toronto.

This canvas began as a live art demonstration for a group at Heartland Forest in Niagara during a workshop. I began adding the double figure and melding it into this background later in the studio. The graffiti-esque noodle motif began to grow as the composition dictated direction, and as the surrealist elements started coming together.

Another painting that began as a horizontal piece, but that was then turned vertically and completely reworked. Elements of the original painting peek through in areas and helped guide the direction of this composition.

The head of the young girl poking through the elbow of the main figure was left in the new composition since it had me thinking of this as a sort of contemporary Kali figure, the fierce Hindu goddess of time, change, creation, and destruction. It felt appropriate to let the painting process keep going in this direction while I was feeling so disgusted with what was happening in the world. The cat was added as both compositional device and to help spread the word along these lines.

This painting began as a horizontal piece with several swimmers depicted. I then reworked it by turning it to the vertical and adding the large figure in the meditation pose and embedding it in with the swimming figure in the top right. The abstracted figurative elements crunched into abstraction with partially hidden elements like the small paper boat add to the dream-like and transformative feel in this piece.
