This painting, aloong with the paintings in this gallery with the strongly demarked visual borders related to a symbolic language I was exploring at the time.  The morphed pictogram-like visual transformation relates to the desire to go from a more 'Flatland' environment into something or somewhere with more form and meaning.  The 'babies' at this time were more symbols of fresh vision and experience that literal new human forms.

This was painted in my last apartment in Brooklyn near the very end of my 5 years as a student at the Art Students League of New York.  It was a piece that grew very organically with a lot of time spent observing it in different light conditions, meditating upon it, learning more and more to be guided by the painting as much as to encourage its direction.

This painting began as a more traditional commissioned family portrait. With working on it over the events of 9-11, it took a turn into chaos and automatism. I let the process take me where it wanted to go, and here it is.
