The environment in this painting came out of landscape around Thunder Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior, melded into abstraction and imagination. I lived in the area for almost a year, which brought more appreciation of landscape into my work.
The figure in this painting is based on Rita Visser, a wonderful singer/songwriter in the region, who was raised in summers on this island. You can check out her new album here: Leapin.

My renewed fascination with the Mona Lisa at this time came with coming across a fantastic book on comparing the commonly known version with another by Da Vinci that not too many people know about. A third hand here references multiple identities among other things, which has always been an element of discussion with Leonardo's work, and the sitter(s) proposed to be involved in his painting.
